Celebrating the end of the war in 1945, a nurse and an unknown soldier were photographed in Times Square in New York kissing. The photo taken by Alfred Eisenstadt was published in Life Magazine and became iconic of WW II.
The nurse , Edith Shain, unknown in the photo for over 30 years, contacted the photographer in the late 70's to let him know that she was the woman in the photo.
The identity of the solider remains unknown even to this day. As a military nurse, Edith cared for injured soldiers during the war. She passed away at the age of 92 in 2011.
The WWII iconic photo of "The Kiss" led to a giant sized statue on display in San Diego commemorating the famous WWII photo.
